Aldi confirms Boxing Day store closures

News

German retailer Aldi has said all of its UK stores will close on Boxing Day this year, continuing a long-standing policy aimed at giving staff additional time off during the festive season.

The UK’s fourth-largest supermarket will shut its doors on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day, reopening on Saturday 27 December. Stores will also close as usual on New Year’s Day, before returning to standard trading hours on Friday 2 January 2026.

To meet demand in the run-up to Christmas, Aldi said it will extend opening hours across its estate, giving shoppers more time to stock up ahead of the holiday period.

Rebecca Heley, communications director at Aldi UK, said: “Christmas is a special time, and we want to ensure all of our colleagues have the opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones. That’s why all Aldi stores will be closed on Boxing Day this year.

“We know how hard colleagues work to deliver an amazing Christmas for our customers, and this is one small way of saying thank you.”

The announcement follows a pay rise for Aldi store staff earlier this month, with entry-level Store Assistants now earning £13.02 an hour nationally and £14.05 an hour within the M25. Aldi also remains the only UK supermarket to offer paid breaks.

Recruitment remains a priority for the discounter, which continues to expand its UK presence.

The supermarket is currently advertising roles across its store network via aldirecruitment.co.uk.
