Tesco will open its new low-carbon concept Superstore in Harrogate, today (9 December), bringing 120 jobs to the North Yorkshire town.
The cutting-edge store incorporates a range of sustainability-led design features, including a timber frame with lower embodied carbon than steel, solar panels to generate on-site electricity, reused stone sourced locally, and the latest energy-efficient heating and lighting systems.
The grocer said the site is a blueprint for future store builds as it seeks to reduce the environmental footprint of its estate.
Alongside a full food range, the Harrogate store will also embed Tesco’s community initiatives.
Ahead of opening, it has awarded a £1,000 grant to Resurrected Bites, a local food waste charity operating community cafés in the area.
The new store will also host a permanent Trussell Trust donation point and support Tesco’s flagship programmes, Stronger Starts and Community Food Connection.
Stronger Starts offers quarterly grants of £500 to £1,500 to charities and groups supporting children, young people and families, with funding allocated through the in-store blue token vote.
The Community Food Connection scheme, run in partnership with FareShare, has redistributed more than 300 million meals to UK charities since its launch in 2015, with over a million meals donated each month.
Tesco said the store will lean heavily on its value proposition, combining Aldi Price Match, Low Everyday Prices and Clubcard Prices across key ranges.
Store Manager Annabelle Speed said the team was “extremely excited” to open the doors.
“We want to offer great value to our customers and the benefits of Tesco Clubcard and Clubcard Prices,” she said.
“We’re so pleased to have got to this point and want to thank everyone for their patience. We look forward to having a positive impact in Harrogate and serving our customers.”
