Tapestry, the owner of Coach and Kate Spade New York, has appointed Pinterest chief technology officer Matt Madrigal to its board, in a move that underlines the growing importance of digital commerce, AI and younger consumer engagement at the US fashion group. The appointment is effective immediately.

Madrigal has been Pinterest’s CTO since 2024 and previously held senior roles at Google, where he led merchant shopping product and engineering teams, as well as at Fanatics, Williams-Sonoma and eBay. That makes this more than a routine board hire: Tapestry is bringing in an executive with deep experience in product discovery, ecommerce infrastructure and how consumers shop across digital platforms.

For retailers, the signal is clear. As brand groups look for new avenues of growth, boardroom attention is shifting further towards customer acquisition, digital inspiration and the technology shaping how the next generation discovers and buys products online. Tapestry said Madrigal’s expertise would support its “Amplify” growth agenda, while the executive himself pointed to AI’s growing role in how brands connect with consumers.

Tapestry chief executive Joanne Crevoiserat said Madrigal’s experience across technology and customer experience at scale would be “instrumental” as the business continues to build stronger connections with younger shoppers and pursue long-term growth.

The appointment takes Tapestry’s board to 11 members, including 10 independent directors.
