The British Retail Consortium has called on the UK’s next prime minister to focus on reducing cost pressures on retailers and supporting investment across the sector.

The trade body’s message follows Sir Kier Starmer’s stepping down this morning (22 June), saying the decision was made to “put the country I love first“.

Responding to the resignation, a BRC spokesperson said the government’s priority should be helping retailers keep prices affordable for consumers while encouraging investment and job creation.

The trade body warned that retailers are facing a “cost of doing business crisis”, with billions of pounds added to operating costs in recent years.

It said continued pressure on businesses risks driving up prices and reducing investment in local communities and high streets.

The BRC urged the incoming administration to support businesses and supply chains to help retailers manage costs and maintain affordability for customers.

Commenting on employment policy, the BRC added: “Retail is one of the UK’s biggest entry points into work, particularly for young people.

“It’s possible to strengthen workers’ rights without damaging job creation – but making hiring more complex and expensive will ultimately cost jobs and opportunities.”
