Virgin Media O2 trials flexible store transfers for student staff

Human ResourcesNews

Virgin Media O2 has launched a new flexible working trial that allows student retail employees to temporarily transfer to stores closer to home during university holidays.

The initiative will enable eligible O2 retail advisors to work at another location during university breaks before returning to their usual store when term resumes.

Virgin Media O2 said the scheme, which makes use of its network of more than 300 stores, is designed to help retain student employees who may otherwise leave their roles when returning home outside term time.

It also aims to allow younger workers to continue earning and gaining workplace experience alongside their studies, while helping stores retain staff who are already familiar with the company’s products and systems.

Virgin Media O2 retail director Will Houldsworth said: “Young people shouldn’t have to choose between gaining a qualification and building a career and this initiative is about removing that barrier.

“By giving our student employees the flexibility to temporarily work from another store closer to home, we’re making it easier for them to continue learning and earning, develop their skills and progress their careers while completing their studies.”

He added that retaining experienced staff would also help strengthen its stores and maintain customer service levels.

The trial follows a suggestion from retail advisor Dhruvi Parag, who said being able to move stores during university holidays had made it easier for her to remain in employment while studying.

“Being able to transfer to a store closer to home during university breaks has made a huge difference, helping me stay in a job I really enjoy while continuing my studies,” she said.

“It’s amazing to know that sharing my experience has helped create something positive that could make it easier for other students to keep working, keep earning and continue building their confidence and skills alongside university.”

The scheme forms part of Virgin Media O2’s wider push to offer more flexible and inclusive employment policies.

The business has previously introduced 26 weeks of paid maternity and adoption leave, 14 weeks of paid paternity leave, alongside paid carers’ and neonatal leave.

It also offers health and wellbeing support through Bupa, financial education and targeted cost-of-living support for staff.
