John Lewis puts 10,000 products on Deliveroo and Uber Eats in 30-minute delivery push

News

John Lewis is allowing shoppers to order thousands of products through Deliveroo and Uber Eats and have them arrive at their door in as little as 30 minutes.

The company has expanded its offering from just 150 products to 10,000 across eight stores in London and the surrounding areas.

The expanded service covers its Oxford Street flagship, Peter Jones in Chelsea, Stratford, Kingston, Canary Wharf, White City, Welwyn Garden City and Bluewater in Kent.

Customers can order everything from Egyptian cotton towels and kettles to beauty products, headphones, electricals and last-minute gifts through the delivery platforms.

Egyptian cotton towels are reportedly the most popular purchase, followed by kettles and drinking glasses. Scented candles, Shark hairdryers and Beats headphones have also proved popular.

The expansion follows an initial trial with Uber Eats last year, which offered a smaller selection of beauty products and gifts.

John Lewis found that orders peaked between midday and 2pm, with shoppers using the service for urgent tech purchases, forgotten gifts and spontaneous treats.

John Lewis chief digital and omnichannel officer Dom McBrien said the expansion, alongside upgrades to its website, would give shoppers ‘greater convenience and flexibility’, while maintaining its usual service standards.

Products are sold at the same prices as in John Lewis stores, although customers face additional delivery and service fees charged by the platforms.

John Lewis Partnership chairman Jason Tarry is pushing ahead with efforts to revive the retailer’s fortunes, including an £800m investment in its stores and digital operations.

The business reported a £124m pre-tax loss in its latest half-year results, despite group sales rising two per cent to £6.3bn.

Sales at the John Lewis department store business fell two per cent to £2bn, with weaker demand for big-ticket purchases such as furniture and electricals weighing on performance.
