Wearable tech rise at John Lewis shows appetite for fitness fuelled fun

News

Weekly sales from John Lewis have shown that consumers want wearable technology that helps them achieve their personal goals.

The TomTom Runner Cardio GPS Watch, which retails at £250, provides real time running statistics, including distance, time, speed, pace and calories burnt during exercise and saw a 200 per cent sales rise this week.

More traditional products such as Adidas trainers, swimming goggles and mini kick floats also saw a triple digit rise, respectively.

John Lewis say sports products have risen three weeks ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Official merchandise sales are also up 50 per cent week-on-week at John Lewis stores. The department store added that TV sales were up 100 per cent.

John Lewis did not immediately return calls on how other wearable tech products were performing.

The retailer also stocks products from Fitbit and Jawbone, the latter tracking consumers sleeping and eating habits.

John Lewis has four Glasgow 2014 ‘shops within shops‘ at its three shops in Glasgow Edinburgh, Aberdeen.

A Juniper Research study at the end of last year forecast that worldwide spending on wearable technology will grow from $1.4bn in 2013 to $3bn in 2014 to $19bn in 2018.
