The transformation of Fenwick’s former New Bond Street flagship has been unveiled to shoppers for the first time, offering a glimpse of the luxury retail spaces set to open in 2027.

Investor and developer Lazari has wrapped the Mayfair development in Emerging Forms, a 120-metre-long and 24-metre-high artwork by British artist Hugo Dalton, which depicts the building’s planned two-storey shopfronts.

The Foster + Partners-designed redevelopment will create 35,800 sq ft of retail space on New Bond Street, with the units due to be handed over to luxury brands in autumn 2027.

The new stores will feature Portland stone, bronze-framed shopfronts and floor-to-ceiling heights of up to 5.6 metres.

As part of the redevelopment, the structures and façades of the existing buildings have been raised to accommodate the larger two-storey retail frontages.

The scheme is aimed at attracting more luxury retailers to the section of New Bond Street closer to the Elizabeth line.

Dalton’s temporary installation covers the development’s scaffolding with sweeping white drapery, designed to give passers-by an indication of how the completed building will look.

The artist said: “For a few weeks this summer, the construction itself became a piece of theatre when the iconic façade of the former Fenwick store was raised 4.5 metres to accommodate the new two-storey shopfronts.

Emerging Forms grew out of that remarkable process. While the construction is monumental and highly engineered, the temporary façade is soft, fluid and sculptural.”

He added: “The building goes back under cover in August, but Emerging Forms gives passers-by a glimpse of the architecture that will be fully revealed in 2027.”

The finished development will also feature permanent artwork by Dalton, created in collaboration with Foster + Partners.

Its Brook Street office entrance will feature a sculptural portal inspired by the River Tyburn, the buried waterway from which Brook Street takes its name, with the design continuing inside through two large-scale wall sculptures.

Dalton has previously worked on retail commissions with Swarovski at Liberty London, Barneys New York and Tiffany & Co.
