Fenwick Newcastle flagship gets green light for £40m renovation plans

Fenwick’s Newcastle flagship has been given a further planning green light, with new work beginning this month.

The renovation forms part of a £40m investment programme aimed creating the “next generation” store.

Mailen Design has been commissioned to “sensitively reimagine” the department store retailer’s original store frontage of the 1880’s building.

The planning consent also includes opening up the ground floor windows, as well constructing a modern new canopy and grand central entrance on Northumberland Street.

According to Fashion Network, the plans for the store and frontage have been developed “in close consultation with Newcastle City Council to enhance community engagement”, forming part of its own major ongoing investments towards a regeneration of Northumberland Street and the wider city centre area.

The entire programme “is transforming the shopper experience, creating a next generation store for the northeast region and marking the retailer’s long-standing commitment to the city’s development and local economy”.

Currently, works have included the completion of one of two central atria, enhancing the building’s interior, alongside the ongoing refurbishment of the beauty hall.

Fenwick Newcastle store director Kieran McBride said: “Our flagship store has remained a treasured part of the city centre since opening in 1882, and its evolution marks a continuing connection to Newcastle, and commitment to the city’s future.

“Improving accessibility and enhancing the customer experience will allow the store to remain the destination of choice for shoppers across the region.”
