Asda and food rescue charity Felix have redistributed the equivalent of 50 million meals through their 13-year partnership.

Since 2013, more than 21,000 tonnes of surplus food have been donated through Asda’s back-of-store programme and distribution centre network, supporting more than 5,000 charities and community groups across the UK.

Asda has distributed the equivalent of almost five million meals through the partnership so far this year, putting it on track for its biggest year of food redistribution.

The milestone coincides with National Foodbank Day on 4 September and forms part of Asda’s wider target to halve food waste across its operations and supply chains by 2030.

The retailer donates surplus food that can no longer be sold but remains safe to eat, including products past their best-before date, which is then redistributed by Felix to charities and community organisations.

Asda Zero Waste lead manager Karen Todd: “Re-distributing the equivalent of 50 million meals is a remarkable milestone and a testament to the strength of our historic partnership with FareShare and with the new charity, Felix.

“Together, we’ve helped ensure good food reaches those who need it most while preventing it from going to waste. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and remain committed to building on this progress to reduce waste and support communities across the UK.”

Felix CEO Charlotte Hill says: “We are so grateful to everyone at Asda for their support over the last 13 years and for reaching this milestone. Asda’s commitment to supporting the redistribution of surplus food makes a real difference to people and communities in need across the UK.

“At a time when demand for food support is growing and people are struggling with the cost of living, helping local charities regularly access surplus food is vitally important. We’re delighted to be continuing our partnership with Asda under our new name.”
