Boots signs Chinese brand expansion deal with Alibaba

Boots’ parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance has signed a deal with Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba to expand a number of its brands internationally.

The health and beauty chain will begin selling a number of its most popular brands in China via Alibaba’s Tmall platform, including its makeup label No7, Soap and Glory and Boots Cucumber.

“This is a great opportunity for us to increase the internationalisation of our products and to utilise the many innovative technologies that Alibaba has developed,” said executive vice president at Walgreens Boots Alliance Ken Murphy.

“At the same time, our collaboration with Tmall Global complements our presence in wholesale and retail pharmacy in China with a new, fantastic channel, through which we can distribute our beauty brands in a market with almost endless possibilities,” Murphy added.

The deal comes amid soaring demand for international brands in China.

Last week London-based fashion retailer Cos revealed it would expand in China next month with the opening of an online store and dedicated page on Alibaba’s Tmall before adding bricks and mortar stores over the next few months.
