Watch: Tesco’s Christmas ad delivers joy despite the cost-of-living crisis

// The Tesco Christmas advert for 2022 acknowledges the cost of living crisis but pledges to help customers celebrate in style
// Throughout the advert, Tesco demonstrates how it is committed to helping the nation prepare for Christmas, with great offers and good value gifts

Tesco has unveiled its Christmas advert for 2022 encouraging people to ‘stand up for joy’ while promising to deliver an ‘affordable, joyful’ festive season while acknowledging the current cost of living crisis.

The new festive campaign from the UK’s largest retailer recognises that “joy may be in short supply at the moment” and aims to help shoppers “celebrate in style”, regardless of their budget.

Set to the soundtrack of Europe’s ‘The Final Countdown’, the advert reveals that Tesco has formed ‘The Christmas Party’, a fictional political party which is standing up for joy.

As the Christmas Party moves through the streets and visits families across the UK, we catch a glimpse of some festive food moments: mince pies, pigs in blankets, delicious desserts, party food and cheese boards, to name a few.

The 60-second ad also draws attention to highlights from the supermarket’s festive food range as well as some of its seasonal offers such as a Christmas dinner for five for under £25, and 3 for 2 deals on party food.

According to Tesco’s own research of over 2,000 consumers, over a third (36%) of those surveyed believe Christmas is more important this year than ever before, while more than a quarter (26%) are looking forward to it more than usual.

Some 87% of people also said Christmas brings them joy, with the campaign highlighting that Christmas remains important to many, despite the cost-of-living crisis putting pressure on finances.

Tesco chief customer officer Alessandra Bellini said: “It’s very important that our seasonal campaigns reflect how our customers genuinely feel and what we know they are looking for. We understand that it is a tough time at the moment with everyone’s finances under pressure, but we also know that people are looking forward to Christmas – in fact our research shows that there is even more excitement around it than usual.

“This is why we decided to officially stand up for joy this Christmas. Through our campaign, we take a look at those moments during the festive period that unite us all – including the delight of eating delicious desserts, sitting around a table together with loved ones, movie nights in our pjs and even the inevitable confusion around bin day – to put a smile on people’s faces as we prepare for a season of meaningful celebrations.

“We want to help everyone enjoy the best bits of Christmas, no matter their budget, and so we’ve also included just some of our many little helps that will make your money go further. From us all at Tesco, we wish you a very merry Christmas.”
