Asda’s flagging fortunes have continued into the new year, with sales at the supermarket chain falling 5.2% in the 12 weeks to 26 January.

Kantar reported the grocer’s market share now sits at 12.6%, down 1% from the 13.6% it held last year.

Asda is hoping the return of its Rollback campaign will help drive sales over the coming months as chair Allan Leighton spearheads a turnaround.

Across the rest of the sector, shoppers embarking on a new year health kick helped drive sales and increase market share at Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Tesco enjoyed a 5.6% uptick in sales – its fastest rise since April 2024 – and a 0.7% rise in market share to 28.5%. Sainsbury’s increased its share of the market to 15.9% as sales rose 4.2%.

According to Kantar, consumers spent £1.2bn on fresh fruit, vegetables and salad in January, £193m more than in December.

Lidl celebrated its third year of consecutive growth as sales surged by 7.4% and market share hit 7.2%, while Aldi accelerated for the third month in a row with sales up 4.2% and market share up to 10.2%.

However, Ocado retained its title as the fastest-growing grocer for the ninth consecutive month as spending jumped 11.3%, meaning it now holds 1.9% of the market.
