Asda is granting thousands of workers bonuses despite missing targets in its turnaround drive, according to a report.

The grocery giant told 9,500 staff members, including head office workers and senior leaders in stores, that they would all be given a thank-you payment at the end of March, The Telegraph reported.

In a memo sent to workers, viewed by The Telegraph, the supermarket’s chair Allan Leighton said all salaried staff who had begun working for the company before October 2025 would be granted a bonus to reflect their “hard work throughout the year”.

The payments come despite some teams reportedly missing targets for the bonuses.

In certain areas of the business, Leighton said that “not all metrics were fully achieved”.

Despite this, he said that “there was still significant effort, commitment and progress made under challenging circumstances”.

Staff members who met their objectives for the year will be granted their entire bonuses, while workers who did not will receive just over a quarter of their full bonus. The amount each employee will receive is dependant on their grade.

Leighton said: “While we didn’t meet all of our objectives, it’s important to pause and acknowledge what we achieved and the important steps we’re taking to rebuild our great business.”

He added that 2026 was set to be “another big year” in its turnaround.

An Asda spokesman said: “In recognition of all the hard work undertaken during the first year of our turnaround, we have today confirmed that all eligible salaried colleagues will receive a thank you bonus in their March pay. This has been well received.”

Retail Gazette has contacted Asda for comment.

The news comes after Asda scrapped bonuses for 10,000 managers last year, with the retailer insisting the decision reflected the “challenging year”.

The decision to cancel bonuses came as the supermarket sought to manage costs and allocate more resources to price reductions.
