River Island is set to close its Sheffield city centre store next month, as it continues to reshape its store estate.

The branch at 15 The Moor will shut permanently on 1 September, with a closing-down sale offering shoppers 30 per cent off selected products ahead of its departure.

A notice displayed at the store thanked customers for shopping at the branch and directed them to River Island’s website and its nearby Meadowhall location once the shop closes.

The chain has operated from The Moor since 2009, having previously traded from Sheffield’s Fargate.

River Island continues to rationalise its UK estate after securing High Court approval for a major restructuring plan in August 2025.

Under the plans, it earmarked 33 of its stores for closure and sought significant rent reductions across a further 71 locations as it looked to put the business on a more sustainable financial footing.

River Island completed the bulk of its initial 33 planned closures around the turn of the year, with locations including Oxford, Poole, Perth, Grimsby, Hereford and Sutton Coldfield among those affected.

Its Sheffield exit is not the only further closure to emerge. Its Oxford Street store in Swansea is also due to shut on 12 September and has launched a closing-down sale with discounts of up to 30 per cent.

The Swansea branch had initially been among the locations where River Island was seeking reduced rents rather than an outright closure.

River Island’s rescue plan was approved by the High Court last summer after the retailer warned it could face insolvency without action to reduce its property costs and restructure the business.

The family-owned fashion chain had been battling declining high street footfall, rising operating costs and increased competition from online and ultra-fast-fashion rivals. Its restructuring was supported by £40m of new funding from the Lewis family’s investment vehicle.

Chief executive Ben Lewis said following approval of the plan that it gave River Island a “strong platform” to deliver its transformation strategy and better align its store estate with changing customer habits.

The restructuring was expected to safeguard more than 4,000 jobs across the business despite the widespread store closures.
