Co-op appoints former Tesco exec to drive membership & marketing

The Co-op has hired former Tesco executive Matt Atkinson to head up its membership and marketing functions.

Set to begin at The Co-op in the coming weeks as its new chief customer officer,  Atkinson will be responsible for the retailer’s membership, digital, data, brand marketing, communications, community and campaigning.

Atkinson will be moving over to the convenience chain and mutual from Saga, where he has been chief marketing officer since October 2015.

Before that he was with Tesco for four years, joining as group marketing and chief digital officer in September 2011 and then promoted to chief marketing officer at the start of 2013.

His new gig at the Co-op comes just over a year after the retailer launched a new membership scheme, which gives members a five per cent reward on all purchases of Co-op own-brand products and services.

The scheme also sees a further one per of their spend being given to charities close to their local store.

“I‘m delighted to welcome Matt to our Co-op to help us on our journey to become the most loved membership business in the UK,” Co-op chief executive Steve Murrells said.

“Our new membership is now a year old and in the first half of our financial year paid back £35m to members and their local communities.

“Matt‘s experience and expertise will build on this, making membership even more compelling and returning our Co-op to a campaigning movement.”
