Diesel’s artistic director Nicola Formichetti has announced his resignation after five years in the role.

Slated to depart the fashion brand and retailer at end of the year when his contract expires, it is not yet known who would replace him.

He was appointed to the role in 2013 as Italian company’s first artistic director.

Prior to Diesel, he was creative director at perfume brand Mugler.

“I want to thank Nicola for our collaboration over the past years – they will remain a special moment in the history of our brand,” Diesel founder Renzo Rosso said.

“He looked at our past, at our iconic pieces, and refreshed them in the brand DNA, reigniting Diesel’s imagery and branding on the values of freedom and originality.”

Formichetti added: “I loved being part of Diesel, starting from its core and its heritage to recreate something newer.

“I thank Renzo for having given me this opportunity, for sharing my vision and for believing in the power of originality.”

In an interview with WWD, Formichetti said he intends to continue work on his own brand Nicopanda, which he launched with his brother Andrea in 2015.
