Morrisons has introduced plastic bottle return vending machines in two stores of its stores, as it powers ahead with its deposit return scheme.
Shoppers in Skipton and Lindsayfield will now be able to return used plastic bottles of any brand with a barcode, and Morrisons own-brand bottles with no barcode via the vending machines.
For every bottle Morrisons customers will receive a coupon for 100 Morrisons More points, or choose to donate 10p to Morrisons charity partner CLIC Sargent.
The trial, which could see more machines rolled out across Morrisons stores if successful, comes amid an increasing drive by the retail industry to reduce single use plastic waste.
In May, Co-op announced it would introduce similar reverse vending machines to six festival sites this summer, while Tesco and Iceland have also backed the scheme.
Morrisons itself has also already made inroads towards plastic waste reduction, including the introduction of paper bags for fruit and vegetables, and allowing customers to use their own containers for meat and fish.
“We want to play our part in making sure plastic bottles are collected and recycled,” Morrisons group corporate services director Andrew Clappen said.
“We’ll listen to customers as they use these machines.”
