Boxing Day footfall to slump 5.2%

Boxing day footfall is expected to plummet by 5.2 per cent this year, the deepest fall for the bank holiday since the recession.

According to forecasts from footfall experts at Springboard, Boxing Day has been experiencing year-on-year decline since 2016, and this year’s prediction is poised to be the worst decline since the year of the global financial crisis nine years ago.

“It is going to be the worst Christmas we’ve had for a good few years, apart from when we were in the depths of recession,” insights director Diane Wehrle said.

Springboard attributed its predictions to the way in consumers are increasingly opting for online shopping and big ticket purchases rather than products, and waning consumer confidence due to uncertainty around Brexit.
