Next has submitted a planning application for a new £125 million warehouse in West Yorkshire, which could potentially create around 1100 jobs.

The application was lodged to Wakefield Council for a site in South Elmsall, south of the fashion retail giant’s existing operations on Field Lane.

If permission is granted, Next would build a 777,000sq ft facility comprising warehouse space and ancillary offices.

A new pedestrian bridge would also be built to link the new facility with the Next’s existing warehouse on the other side of the road.

Next said the new warehousing and distribution space was required to cope with an anticipated increase in online sales in the coming years.

The retailer added that the proposed development would provide an “extension of the local purchasing, recruitment, skills development, career progression and community benefits already associated with the existing Next distribution operations in South Elmsall”.

Next also said the warehouse would help secure “the future of Next’s existing operations in South Elmsall, and the substantial local employment and benefits to the local economy that this existing development provides”.
