Sainsbury’s has cut down on the amount plastic packaging for its pancake mix by 86 per cent this year as Shrove Tuesday – otherwise known as Pancake Day – takes place.

The new pancake cartons are expected to save a total of 25 tonnes of plastic every year.

The grocer remains committed to halving its use of plastic packaging by 2025.

Sainsbury’s also recently cut the amount of plastic packaging for steaks by 70 per cent and switched from plastic trays to cardboard for packaging all lamb and beef Taste the Difference products and So Organic steaks.

Furthermore, the supermarket has also saved 7.5 tonnes on plastic from confectionery due to thinner packaging alongside recyclable packaging for heart shaped lollipops and Chocolate Raspberry Slabs.

“With a goal to halve our overall plastic use by 2025, Sainsbury’s are committed to continuing to minimise the use of plastic across our ranges including seasonal products, supporting our customers in their efforts to reduce plastic and recycle more of our products,” Sainsburys product innovation director Claire Hughes said.

Sainsbury’s has reduced around 4500 tonnes of own brand and branded primary plastic packaging since 2019.
