Upmarket supermarket Waitrose enjoyed a 12.3% rise in sales as popular summer events helped drive a successful week for the retailer.

The figures, which exclude fuel, were helped by the Glastonbury and Wimbledon factors delivering an increase in sales as warmer weather shone across the UK.

Andy Murray‘s progression in Wimbledon helped drive sales increases in strawberries, up 56 per cent, Champagne, up 26 per cent, and Pimm‘s, which surged to 90 percent compared to the same time last year.

The group, part of the John Lewis Partnership, said Glastonbury in particular had a “huge impact”.

Barbecue meat sales were also up 50 per cent, including beef which was up 17 per cent and sausages up 18.5 per cent.

Sun worshipers were also out in force as sales of suncare shot up by 27 per cent.
