Tesco has opened its sixth dotcom centre in Erith which will serve customers in east London, Croydon and North-West Kent.

The 120,000 sq ft centre, which has created 550 jobs, follows dotcom openings in Croydon, Enfield, Crawley, Greenford and Aylesford.

Simon Belsham, Managing Director for Grocery Home Shopping said the facility would allow Tesco to expand its reach and offer the best possible range and service.

Belsham told Retail Week that the extra capacity would allow Tesco to offer more ethnic foods and upmarket lines, depending on what shoppers wanted.

Tesco, which is nearly 1 ½ years into a £1bn recovery plan, makes up 47.5 per cent of the online grocery market, according to Kantar. The new Erith store will sell 30,000 products – 50 per cent more than the average store.

The value of the online grocery market is set to double to £11.1bn by 2017 according to IGD.
