British shoppers spend £2.4bn on Christmas outfits they’ll never wear again

Brits are set to splurge £2.4bn on outfits for this festive season however items may be worn less than three times according a study from charity Hubbub.

The average person will spend £73.90 on their outfit but one in five people will never re wear an outfit for an event reported the environmental charity.

Although the amount differs by gender – Hubbub’s survey of 3,008 adults in the UK revealed that men are set to spend more than women, £88.14 per person compared with £63.12.

The study included an analysis of fabrics used among 17 online, high street and designer outlets.

It revealed that out of 169 party dresses, 94 per cent were partially or completely made from plastic and plastic-derived materials.

However only 24 per cent of participants were aware of the amount of plastic used in the occasion wear.

The charity is using its findings to highlight the environmental impact of fast fashion.
