Demand for face masks outstrip milk at the Co-op

// Co-op says its £3 face masks have become its most in-demand items, outselling milk, eggs and bread
// It said it has now secured millions more stock to meet demand

The Co-op’s £3 face covering range has seen a surge in demand and have quickly become the fastest selling items across its stores, outselling everyday essentials such as milk.

The grocery retailer began selling the non-medical graded face coverings at the end of May in all of its 2600 stores.

It said they have since become the most in-demand items, outselling milk, eggs and bread on its busiest day following the latest government advice that they must be worn on public transport from June 15.

Co-op said it has now secured millions more stock to meet demand and the range will shortly be available across selected stores on Deliveroo and the retailer’s online shop in selected postcodes.

The retailer is currently selling a 5-pack disposable non-medical face covering, and a re-useable non-medical face covering, for £3 each.

It said its re-useable non-medical face covering is antibacterial, water repellent and can be washed for up to 20 times.

“As a community retailer with a store in every postal area, this move ensures our customers and members can get access to face coverings easily,” Co-op buying manager Joseph Turner said.

“We know it’s important to reserve valuable PPE for health and care workers so these are not suitable for medical use but have been designed with customers in mind and are just one way we can be careful, along with social distancing and washing our hands.

“Following the demand, we have secured more stock to ensure we can continue to serve the nation.”
