Asda is offering unlimited tea, soup and a roll for just £1 to customers aged 60 and over at any of its 205 cafes throughout November and December.

The initiative was launched to support customers and community groups struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.

The grocer said its older customers are being disproportionately affected by the rising inflation.

Asda’s latest Income Tracker shows those aged 65 to 74 experienced a £163 drop in disposable income in August, compared to last year.

The offer will run alongside the current ‘Kids eat for £1’ offer which served over 557,000 meals in late June.

“We know that this winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and a fixed income,” Asda co-owner, Mohsin Issa said.

“We’ve already been able to serve over half a million meals through our Kids Eat for £1 initiative in our cafes and we’re hoping our new offer of soup and hot drinks for over 60s will prove just as impactful for those who need it most.

“Meanwhile, the cost of living grant programme led by Asda’s charity The Asda Foundation will support grassroots organisations who are providing a lifeline in their communities during these tough times.”

Great but how about an alternative instore offer for pensioners and over 60s that live in towns where their Asda stores dont have cafè’s?
We have 2 Asda stores in Scunthorpe, one large one small, but no Cafè, the nearest would Be Doncaster or Hull, that hot drink whilst your out would be very welcome, but many would miss out

Whilst this appears a positive move to help the over 60`s, many Asda stores have long since closed their own Café operations, opting to offload them to other operators such MacDonald’s or other fast food companies, our own large Asda store saw its own Café replaced by another MacDonald’s some two years ago.

Look at the early comments already. It’s just never enough is it? They always start the same, “very nice but…”
‘What about this group of people, or that group?’ One thing after another.
If you’re so concerned about those who will miss out, get involved. Do your own soup run, pay for someone’s coffee next time you’re in your local cafe. That would be nice!

Or you can just share with the world, all of your thoughts on why this scheme just doesn’t go far enough, like the whinger that you are…

Very good news I’m glad someone is making an effort for our elders.
