Adidas has withdrawn its request to the US authorities to reject a Black Lives Matter application for a trademark featuring three parallel stripes.

The sportswear retailer said: “Adidas will withdraw its opposition to the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation’s trademark application as soon as possible.”

On Monday, Adidas told the US Trademark Office that the political group’s yellow-stripe design would create confusion with its own three-stripe mark.

The retailer sought to block Black Lives Matter’s application to use the design on goods it also sells, such as shirts, hats and bags, claiming consumers would likely think their goods were connected or came from the same source.

Since 2008, Adidas has filed over 90 lawsuits and signed more than 200 settlement agreements related to the three-stripe trademark, according to court documents from the sportswear retailer’s battle against designer Thom Browne.
