Amazon plots more warehouses and headcount in Europe

// Amazon plans for more warehouses in Europe as it looks to expand its footprint across the continent
// The move comes as the retailer undertakes aggressive cost-cutting measures including a mass layoff of staff across the business

Amazon exec Stefano Perego has said the tech giant is set to open new warehouses and hire more people in Europe as it looks to increase its footprint across the continent.

The comes as Amazon undertakes aggressive cost cutting, including axing 27,000 staff and shutting three UK distribution centres.

The vice president of global operations for north America and Europe said Amazon’s footprint in Europe is to increase from its 70+ fulfilment facilities but declined to comment on specific numbers.

The expansion plan is part of the online retailer’s strategy to increase efficiency by reducing delivery distances and making its warehouses more automated.

Amazon paused its growth plans at the start of the year after posting its worst annual loss on record and shredding around 30% of its value due to inflation concerns.

Sales bounced back last month as the tech giant posted a quarterly profit of £2.6bn, up from a £3bn loss made in the same period of 2022.
