Supermarket shelves face more fruit and veg shortages

// Supermarket shelves face more fruit and vegetable shortages due to poor weather in the UK and abroad
// A chilly start to spring has delayed the British growing season as soaring temperatures in Spain  hit supply

Supermarket shelves could be hit by more fruit and vegetable shortages as temperatures soar in southern Spain and cold weather in the UK delays the growing season.

Temperatures reached a record high of 39C last month in parts of Andalucía in Spain amid an ongoing drought that has affected the production of vegetables, The Guardian reported.

Meanwhile, in the UK, the cold start to the spring growing season and lack of sunlight has made it challenging for British growers.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Simon Roberts warned of further shortages last week as problems with fresh produce, including eggs and peppers, remained.

Waitrose said it was working with its suppliers to get peppers back on its shelves and that it expects “stock levels to stabilise in the coming weeks as we move into the UK season”.

In February, Britain’s biggest supermarkets were forced to introduce customer limits on several fresh fruit and vegetables after shelves were left empty following a wave of poor weather across Europe and Africa.
