Amazon users plunge ahead of Prime Day

Amazon UK has lost more than a million daily mobile app users since the start of the year, according to mobile analytics firm GWS.

The business intelligence firm revealed the number of Amazon’s daily shoppers has declined from 9.3 million in January to 8.3 million, ahead of the retail giant’s highly anticipated Prime Day.

The decline comes as the rapid emergence of ecommerce rivals has led to a significant fall in Amazon app users during the past seven months.

Online marketplace Temu, which launched in the UK in April 2023, has seen daily mobile users rise quickly in one month to around 3.5 million, with growth plateauing since May.

Shein also poses competition to the retailer, having doubled its daily users users from 1 million to 2 million during the past six months, while Vinted has around 2 million daily users.

GWS CEO Dr Paul Carter said: “For years Amazon has gone all but unchallenged when it comes to offering the complete ecommerce package to consumers, and much of its success has been via its mobile app.

“However, mobile analytics data from GWS shows how brand loyalty on retail shopping apps moves quickly during challenging economic times, and retailers need to stay on top of the curve or risk getting left behind”.

GlobalData’s senior retail analyst Eleanor Simpson-Gould also explained Amazon needed to offer “unmissable deals on top brands” over its Prime Day to increase involvement in the event, due to “many retailers already advertising a plethora of discounts”.
