John Lewis trials virtual ‘try on’ service for fashion rental offer

John Lewis has launched a new service that allows customers to virtually ‘try on’ their potential rental purchases, in partnership with fit software firm Zyler.

The department store’s trial is now live across over 750 different garments where shoppers can upload their headshot, input their height, bra size and dress size which then allows them to click on the ‘try it on’ icon above the product.

An image will be generated, adapting the image that is already on the site, enabling the customer to see if the length is appropriate for what they are looking for, or whether a certain style fits them well or if the colour suits their skin tone.

John Lewis innovation lead Danielle Gagola said: ‘We’re extremely excited to be able to lead the way in rental innovation by partnering with Zyler on our new ‘try it on’ function. It allows our customers to experiment with more styles, colours and lengths in products which they may not have tried before.

‘We’re always looking for ways to encourage our customers to use our more sustainable services, and hopefully this function will encourage customers to give renting a go!’

As rental fashion continues to grow in popularity, last October John Lewis teamed up with rental platform specialist Hurr to launch a ‘dress for hire’ rental service.

With a minimum rental fee of £20, customers can browse the collection online and choose to rent an outfit for four, eight, 10 or 20 days. Items then arrive with a return bag and pre-paid label and are sent back to Hurr, which will have them dry cleaned.

While back in 2020, the retailer launched a furniture rental service with prices starting at £17 a month with items ranging from beds to bar stools, and sofas to dining tables.
