Morrisons is to close its manufacturing centre in Bradford, placing over 450 jobs at risk.

It is the latest move by the supermarket to cut costs as part of its £700m three-year savings programme.

The supermarket said it plans to transfer the work to its newly expanded fruit packing plant in Thrapston, Northamptonshire and its distribution centre in Wakefield, where it will create 400 new jobs at the sites.

Morrisons said the closure, which will be completed by the end of October, will save 650,000 food miles annually and create other efficiency savings, The Business Desk reported.

As part of its cost-cutting drive, Morrisons is transferring more than 200 contact centre jobs at its Gain Lane office to an outside contractor.

The supermarket said the move involved no redundancies and staff’s pay and length of service would be protected.

Chief executive David Potts said earlier this month that Morrisons was “making very good progress” with its cost reduction programme after quarterly sales rose 3.1% to £3.7bn in the 13 weeks to 30 April 2023.
