Women’s World Cup: retailers set to rake in nearly £500m

Retailers are forecast to earn £464m over the FIFA Women’s World Cup, as viewers stock up on supplies ahead of the game.

Savings website VoucherCodes.co.uk revealed 21.9m football fans were predicted to watch the competition and that 87% of them were set to be watching from home.

Although, only 22% are expected to watch from their local pub, bar or restaurant since the cup is being held in Australia and New Zealand, resulting in many early start times for the games.

During the tournament, which kicks off 20 July, retailers are predicted to welcome 15.1m customers into their stores.

Spending on food and drink during the tournament is forecast to make up £333m of total sales.

Meanwhile, retailers are also set to rake in £57.6m from sportswear, £32.6m from TV electrical goods and £21.7m from souvenirs.

VoucherCodes.co.uk manager director Maureen McDonagh explained: “The ongoing cost-of-living crisis, paired with the early kick off times means that many consumers are likely to choose to watch this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup from home in a bid to save money.

“As a result, retailers can expect a busy period in the run up and during the tournament as fans stock up their fridges and cupboards with match day essentials”.
