Costco eyes 14 new stores as it ramps up expansion drive

Costco is set to open 14 new warehouses in the UK over the next two years.

The bulk buy retailer is looking at several locations, with plans to open “as soon as possible”, The Sun reported.

However, some openings could be delayed if securing the sites takes longer than expected.

According to the publication, the proposed locations include Brighton, Cambridge, Chelmsford, Colchester, Exeter, south Glasgow, Maidstone, southeast London, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Preston, Wolverhampton, southwest Birmingham and Oxford.

Costco is said to be working with property development firm Chase Commercial to find and convert the new spaces.

The retailer will soon open a new warehouse in Gloucester following an acquisition of a large site in Eastern Avenue last month.

The proposed 15 new stores will take Costco’s UK store portfolio to 44.

The rapid expansion plans come as the retailer’s UK division saw pre-tax profits jump 44% to £120.6m in the year to August 2022.

The performance was boosted by an 18.2% surge in sales over the period to £4bn.
