Apple ditches leather as part of ‘net zero by 2030’ target

Apple is to ditch the use of leather in all of its accessories in an effort to meet its ‘net zero by 2030’ goal.

The tech giant will replace the animal-made material in its watch straps and phone cases with a 68% recycled textile called ‘FineWoven’.

Apple vice president for environment Lisa Jackson said: “Leather is a popular material for accessories, but it has a significant carbon footprint, especially at Apple’s scale.

“To reduce our impact, we will no longer use leather in any new Apple product, including watchbands.”

It is not the only change the retailer is making to meet its net zero targets.

Apple will implement new processes to cut down on the use of raw materials in its products as part of its target to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.

The retailer claimed its watches had already met the target, after cutting emissions in their production and shipping by 75%, while the remaining emissions would be offset by buying carbon credits.

The tech giant will also use more recycled materials in its iPhone range, including using batteries that are made from 100% recycled cobalt and 100% recycled rare earth metals.
