Poundstretcher is understood to be scouting former Wilko sites for new stores.

A property expert told Retail Week that the retailers was exploring several of the collapsed retailer’s locations across the country, with a particular interest in the southeast of England.

Wilko, which collapsed at the beginning of last month, will shutter all its stores by October 8, making more than 10,000 employees redundant.

Both Poundland and B&M have acquired a tranche of the retailer’s stores, 71 and 51 respectively, in a last minute deal.

However, around 200 Wilko stores are still left unaccounted for while administrators complete the rest of the process.

Dunelm, Lidl and Aldi have all expressed interest in taking on some of the former units.

Sorry for all those staff out of a job as a result of the company not being run properly. But as a customer who would pop in there every other day I went elsewhere as they were actively pushing customers to self service

Needn’t have happened Wilko should have been sold to competent owners at least a decade ago.

Poundstretcher will look for the ones with the cheapest rent, open them, and when the rent goes up, close them.
