Poundland has unveiled plans to open 75 new stores over the next three months as part of its rapid expansion plans.

Set to be the discount retailer’s largest three-month growth programme in its history, the pipeline includes a mix of new stores and relocations of existing branches.

The business is continuing the conversion of the 71 Wilko branches it acquired last month – with 19 more to open in the next two weeks, bringing the total number of stores to 56.

The retailer’s relocation of its Watford shop will see it occupy a unit in part of the former John Lewis stores.

Poundland managing director Austin Cooke said: “To open 75 stores in the space of a single quarter is nothing short of a super-human effort from every member of the Poundland team. To each and every one of them I say ‘thank you’.

“But we’re working at this pace because we’re on a mission – ambitious to grow, create jobs and serve new communities by opening shops customers and communities can be proud of.”

Wow! 75 stores in a quarter! That requires a multi-function plan of immense proportions and human resources to match. I imagine, for example, the intake of stock will be a huge task and hiccups will occur along the way. Contingency plans will, I am sure, have been done, but the bar has been set very high at 75. I wish Poundland all good luck with this current challenge.
