UK shoppers are forecast to buy fewer goods during Black Friday sales this year as the cost-of-living crisis hits spending.

Customers are predicted to spend slightly more than last year, however, this is driven by inflation as they will buy fewer items, according to data from GlobalData for Vouchercodes.

Shoppers are forecast to spend nearly £8.7bn between Friday morning and Monday night.

Although this is 0.4% more than last year, non-food inflation is currently running at 3.4%, according to the BRC.

UK ecommerce association IMRG also found a 6.2% decline in sales during the second week of November, following a 0.5% increase in the first week.

The online retail trade body predicted Black Friday spend online would drop 2%.

Meanwhile, online giant Amazon’s Black Friday sales could be hit by strikes at some of its warehouses, as staff campaign for better conditions and pay.
