THG has said all employees based at its Manchester head office must resume in-office work on a full-time basis for five days per week, starting 2 January 2024.
According to Retail Week, no consultation took place with the online giant’s staff before the change was announced and there has been no communication as to whether or not employees will be compensated for any additional travel costs.
However, the title understands that there’s no legal obligation for an employer to do so.

A THG spokesperson told the title: “At THG, face-to-face interaction has a hugely positive impact on our business environment and results in a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere in our offices. We therefore took the decision to return to a more regular, pre-Covid way of working and we will be asking our valued employees to attend the office five days per week.
“We will, of course, take into account any personal circumstances, but strongly believe this move will continue to ensure THG remains an exciting and engaging place to work where colleagues can come together to collaborate.
“We offer a range of benefits to our colleagues, including enhanced paternity and maternity leave and annual leave, as well as reduced office working hours, making THG a fantastic place to work.”
This week THG snapped up skincare brand Biossance in a deal worth up to $20m.
The business acquired the company from US biotechnology group Amyris, which recently entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.
THG snapped up Biossance assets including IP, as well as inventory and debtors with a book value of $29m.

Great move. We need more of this from companies.
Very Sensible.
Smart move by THG, home working erodes company culture. People that like home working are lazy
If they have consulted and no one has joined post covid then I guess it might work for them. The reality though of course is people will simply leave for positions that offer more flexibility. Only someone living in the past or who feels the need to micro manage however would feel that dynamic and vibrant can only happen by being in an office 5 days per week and therefore they have WAY bigger issues than changing the way they have been working… dynamic and vibrant first and foremost needs happy energetic people not slaves to a desk or particular location
can’t blame them really. no one is really doing a full days work from home. and we all know it
Annual leave is a statutory requirement NOT a benefit!
Can you quantify this Chris?
Silly move by THG.
No it’s not. More companies should be following their example.
What on earth is THG doing – they have lost touch with their staff and will now struggle to retain and attract talent.
