John Lewis will shut its standalone stores on Boxing Day, with only its Trafford and Stratford shopping centre shops remaining open.

The majority of Waitrose stores will also shut on 25 and 26 December, The Sun reported, meaning over 300 Waitrose and 37 John Lewis sites will remain closed on Boxing Day.

However, some of the premium supermarket’s sites attached to petrol stations will reportedly stay open on Boxing Day.

Meanwhile, the majority of Waitrose and John Lewis stores will also be closed to shoppers on New Year’s Day.

The move comes after brands including Wilko and The Range closed stores on Boxing Day last year, despite the holiday typically serving as a lucrative day for retailers.

CDS Superstores insisted at the time that it wanted to give its staff members a “well-earned break” as it closed more than 200 branches.

Home Bargains is also set to close all of its branches on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day this year.
