US President Donald Trump’s global tariffs have been ruled unlawful and blocked by a trade court in the US.
The Court of International Trade found that Trump exceeded his authority to impose higher taxes on imports from specific countries last month.
Trump said the new tariffs were necessary due to a “national emergency”, but the court ruled that the president’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was not a valid reason.

The court said: “The Worldwide and Retaliatory Tariff Orders exceed any authority granted to the President by IEEPA to regulate importation by means of tariffs.
“…The court does not pass upon the wisdom or likely effectiveness of the president’s use of tariffs as leverage. That use is impermissible not because it is unwise or ineffective, but because [federal law] does not allow it.”
The Trump administration filed an appeal minutes after the ruling, meaning the case could escalate to the Supreme Court.
The White House said in a statement: “It is not for unelected judges to decide how to properly address a national emergency.”
