Tesco has unveiled plans to build a new multimillion-pound distribution hub at the DP World London Gateway shopping terminal, forecast to launch in 2029.

Tesco noted that its investment represented its commitment to making sure its distribution network remained “fit for the future” so that it could keep meeting the demands of its increasing store network.

The new centre will feature the latest energy-efficient measures and would be expected to obtain the building research establishment environmental assessment method (Breeam) outstanding certification, according to Tesco.

Tesco is working with logistics firm Witron on the distribution centre.

The supermarket’s UK distribution and fulfilment director Andrew Woolfenden said: “Our distribution network is vital for ensuring customers receive products at the right place, time and condition.

“As demand grows across our store network, we’re excited to partner with Witron and DP World to develop a distribution centre that leverages the latest technology, enhancing our supply chain and supporting our decarbonisation goals.”

He added: “By locating at London Gateway, we can also take full advantage of the seaport and rail infraestructure.”

In March, rival grocer Ocado was given the green light for a new distribution hub in Nottinghamshire, creating hundreds of new jobs.

Greggs also unveiled plans for a new national distribution centre in North Northamptonshire last year, in partnership with property developer Tritax Symmetry.
