Walpole has named Fortnum & Mason CEO Tom Athron as its new chair, succeeding Michael Ward, managing director of Harrods, who has stepped down after completing his nine-year tenure.
Ward will continue his involvement with Walpole in a newly created role as president emeritus.
Athron has led Fortnum & Mason since December 2020. Prior to this, he was chief operating officer at Matchesfashion and spent 13 years at the John Lewis Partnership, where he held several senior roles, including a seat on the main board.
On his new role, Athron said: “I am honoured to take on the chairmanship of Walpole. I look forward to collaborating with chief executive Helen Brocklebank, the board, and our members to further Walpole’s commitment to championing British luxury both domestically and internationally.”
“On behalf of everyone at Walpole, I want to thank Michael for his exceptional dedication and the energy he has brought to the organisation.”
Ward added: “These past nine years have been challenging for business, but I’m proud of Walpole’s role in raising the profile of British luxury and advocating for our sector. Our industry is now well-positioned for future growth.”
“Congratulations to Tom on his appointment. I am pleased to continue supporting Walpole and the luxury sector as president emeritus.”
