M&S is still grappling with the fallout from its cyberattack in April, with several of its internal IT systems yet to fully recover.

It is understood that the retailer’s buying and merchandising teams are still working with faulty internal systems, Retail Week reported.

M&S said its customer facing systems are now up and running following the relaunch of its click and collect service at the start of the week.

The retailer was hit by a cyber attack over the Easter bank holiday weekend in April, causing its contactless payment systems to fail in-store.

M&S was forced to halt online orders and struggled to keep store shelves stocked following what it described as a “highly sophisticated cyber incident”. It has spent the last three months rebooting its IT network.

M&S, which resumed online recruitment last month, is thought to still have a hiring freeze in place for certain functions.

The retailer has estimated that the ransomware attack on its systems cost the business £300m in lost profits and hopes to mitigate the fallout through “management of costs, insurance and other trading actions”.

M&S chair Archie Norman told MPs last month that the cyber-attack as “an out of body experience”.

“In the business world we’re used to competing, we’re used to dealing with customers, and products that work or don’t work. But it’s very rare to have a criminal actor in another country – or in this country, we’re never quite sure – seeking to stop customers shopping at M&S, essentially trying to destroy your business,” he said.

M&S has been contacted for comment.
