Waitrose has boosted its commitment to London with a multi-million pound investment in its physical retail.

Under the next phase of its £1bn expansion programme, the upmarket grocer opened a new Little Waitrose convenience store in Wandsworth New Acres today (2 October). The 2,500 sq ft store is based in a new neighbourhood development.

Additionally, Little Waitrose stores in Coulsdon, the Crouch End and Old Brompton Road will also be relaunched by the end of the year, with more London branches to be renewed in 2026.

Waitrose interim managing director Tina Mitchell said: “From our roots in Acton where we opened our very first shop, to Streatham which saw our first supermarket, and now our newest convenience shop in Wandsworth, London has always been home to Waitrose and central to our success.

“Today, as we open our 62nd store in the capital, we’re committing to investing millions to expand and refresh our portfolio.

“We pride ourselves on excellent customer service and by continually listening to what our customers want and need, we are well positioned for future growth in London and across the UK.”

Waitrose stores in Marylebone and Clerkenwell have also received upgrades.

Both shops now feature a new look bakery and improved fruit and vegetables section, new John Lewis products, new refrigeration, and self service tills as well as staffed checkouts.

The Marylebone store features enhanced meat and fish counters as well as a dedicated dry aged beef counter and an updated wine selection, including chilled white wine and champagne.

The grocery giant said it was investing in every shop nationwide, from refurbishments to new openings.

Last month, Waitrose opened a new Little Waitrose in Bristol’s The Arches, marking the latest milestone in its multi-year, £1 billion investment programme across its UK store estate.

The site offers more than 3,400 product lines, spanning Waitrose’s premium own-brand ranges, its Essential Waitrose value range, Waitrose Duchy Organic, household brands and an in-store bakery.
