Greggs has appointed former Tesco finance boss Richard Smothers as a new independent non-executive director, effective 1 February 2026.

Smothers is set to assume the position of chair of the audit committee from 6 March. He will join the audit, nominations and remuneration committees upon appointment.

The food to go retailer’s non-executive director and current chair of the audit committee, Kate Ferry, will step down from the board on 6 March.

Smothers worked as chief financial officer (CFO) of pub retailer Greene King from 2017 to early 2025. He also served as CFO of Mothercare from 2015 to 2017.

The businessman spent 14 years at Tesco in various senior finance positions in the UK and internationally, including a stint as the supermarket’s finance director – UK operations from 2003 to 2006.

Greggs chair Matt Davies said: “As previously noted, Kate has made an exceptional contribution to the board over the last six years and she will be truly missed.

“We are delighted that Richard has accepted our invitation to join the board.

“He has extensive financial expertise in a listed company environment and great experience in retail which will be of significant benefit to our business.”
