Outdoor clothing retailer Mountain Warehouse has posted a 10.7 per cent rise in like-for-like sales for the six week period ending 5 January.

The retailer, which sells own-brand cycling, walking and camping gear, posted a 127 per cent surge in online sales over the Christmas period. It has benefited from the growing trend of waterproof jackets and wellies and said it sold a waterproof jacket every five seconds. Sales of its wellies have more than doubled year-on-year. It also reported a “strong rise” in click and collect over its mobile platform.

Commenting on the performance, Mountain Warehouse CEO Mark Neale said: “Our outstanding Christmas performance caps an excellent 2013 for the business. During the year, we opened 20 new stores and significantly expanded our online operations. Our success, in a difficult retail environment, is testament to the hard work of our staff and the quality and value of the products we offer consumers.”
