Tesco confirms it’s ‘phasing out’ CDs and DVDs

Tesco has confirmed it is phasing out CDs and DVDs due to weakened consumer demand as streaming takes its toll on the category.

The grocery giant has been removing the categories in stores over the past month and has replaced the space with higher demand categories, such as homewares. No colleagues will be impacted by the changes.

Rival Sainsbury’s removed CDs and DVDs from its stores last year.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “As more customers move towards digital entertainment, over the last month we have begun to phase out some products in our entertainment range, focusing instead on ranges where we see the highest demand from customers such as homeware and outdoor products.”

This is the latest in a raft of changes for Tesco as it seeks to boost efficiency and focus on what matters to customers most. This week it revealed it will close counters in 317 stores, remove night time stock replenishment and axe discount chain Jack’s. Some 1,600 roles are at risk due to the changes.

Much like the move to scrap CDs and DVDs, Tesco said it had decided to remove fish, meat and deli counters due to dwindling demand.
