Aldi is set to roll out solar panels to 90 more of its UK stores under a £7.7m investment into its on-site renewable energy programme.

The German discounter is installing advanced 144 kWp solar systems across 41 shops before the end of the year, with an additional 49 stores set to receive the technology in 2026.

The new solar installations will generate an average of 100,000 kWh per year, with the move forming part of Aldi’s wider commitment to boosting its renewable energy usage on site and strengthening its energy resilience.

In addition, any of Aldi’s upcoming new stores will be fitted with the advanced solar systems as part of the grocer’s new store openings programme.

Aldi UK managing director of national real estate Jonathan Neale said: “By expanding the use of solar panels across our UK stores, we’re making practical, long-term changes to how we power our operations, which will help us generate more of our energy on site from renewable sources.

“By investing in our estate now, we’re strengthening the resilience of our operations and helping ensure we can keep delivering great value for customers across Britain in a more sustainable way.”

The move builds on the grocer’s sustainability efforts, as it unveiled lighter wine bottles across its range earlier this month, as part of its ongoing efforts to cut unnecessary packaging and reduce its environmental footprint.

In April, the brand also set out to fund 125 UK beach cleans during 2025 under its partnership with the Marine Conservation Society.
