Aldi is rolling out lighter wine bottles across its range as part of its ongoing efforts to cut unnecessary packaging and reduce its environmental footprint.
Working with wine suppliers and bottling partner Greencroft, the discounter has introduced 300g bottles for 20 million still wines this year — down from an average of 409g.
The supermarket said the change brings the average weight across its still wine range to 371g, with more products expected to follow later this year.
The lighter bottles are now being used for lines such as Grapevine Sauvignon Blanc and Grapevine Merlot.
The retailer has been gradually reducing bottle weights since 2022, with the latest move equating to the removal of 12.7 million empty bottles from circulation annually.
Aldi UK national sustainability director Luke Emery said: “We’re always looking for practical ways to reduce our environmental footprint while continuing to deliver the unbeatable quality and value our customers expect.
“By working closely with our wine suppliers, we’re introducing a simple yet impactful change that’s already cutting down on materials and associated carbon.
“It’s one of the many steps we’re taking as we continue to explore how we can continue to reduce bottle weights across our range and make our products more sustainable over time.”
Earlier this year, Aldi also launched the UK’s first own-brand wine in an aluminium bottle — the Costellore Pinot Grigio — which weighs just 95g, making it nearly 75% lighter than traditional glass and fully recyclable.
